Thank you for reaching out about editorial support!
I offer more than 15 years' experience with manuscript critique, developmental editing, and coaching, with a number of my clients completing book projects and publishing on their own or with a publishing house. I’ve also helped clients launch their Substack newsletters.
You may come with a completed first draft, or a partial draft (because you're feeling stuck and want another point of view), or an early draft we can use to discuss possibilities for what might come next.
I do this work thoroughly, with great consideration for the higher-level view — the overall arc of the work, themes, structure, and character development (where applicable). But I also offer more granular feedback, attending to voice, vividness of detail, the internal logic of the writing, and elegance of word placement, among other things. Reviews can also include line-editing and copyediting.
I hold an MFA in creative writing from the University of Houston (my focus was fiction); I have many years of experience writing about books and other topics for various outlets (The Dallas Morning News, The Texas Observer, and Yes! Magazine); and I’ve taught various forms of writing to people of all ages and skill-levels for more than a decade.
My goal is to help you see what's shining most in your manuscript, and where you might focus your energy in your next revision. I want you to feel motivated and invigorated by the work you've created, and excited to keep crafting so your work can move to the next stop on its journey.
All manuscript consultations come with a 90-minute debrief Zoom session to explore higher-level discoveries, answer all your questions, and help you identify next steps. You will also receive your manuscript with my comments and questions throughout, as well as line- and copyedits, if you request them. The written feedback plus consultation will additionally offer lessons in the craft of writing like would receive in a writing workshop.
To explore working together, please fill out this form. Then I’ll get in touch to set up a free 30-minute exploration call. I’ll also request a copy of your manuscript to assess its length and level of development. You’ll also receive a sample of my feedback on five pages of your work. If you want to explore working together at that point, I’ll provide a proposal based on the length of your work and the level of support you’re seeking.
I’m excited to hear from you, learn more about your project, and potentially collaborate!
Thanks,
Cecily
