This 4-part workshop is designed to help writers in various stages of the novel-writing process. If you’ve completed a 1st (or 17th!) draft, this workshop is for you. If you’ve been developing a story concept and writing scattered scenes, this workshop is for you. If you've been novel-curious and you're waiting for characters and storylines to materialize, this workshop is for you.
Over the course of four weeks, we’ll use Tarot to examine different aspects of your story — prevailing themes, characters, and setting. I'll guide you through questions, exercises, and Tarot spreads to help you understand your work more deeply and plan out next steps to move you to the next phase of your novel.
Each session opens with a short craft talk, followed by guided Tarot work to bring new clarity and ideas to your work as an author. We’ll have time to discuss cards that come up, and to workshop different challenges and possibilities you see in terms of shaping your novel.
Our final session allows us to debrief, process the journey, and determine where we’re headed next. You will leave this series with a deeper sense of the world and people in your story and how you can sustainably move the story forward.
All sessions meet on Zoom on Wednesday evenings, except for the final session, which meets on Tuesday.
** All sessions will be recorded, and participants will have access to a folder containing recordings, Tarot spreads, and other prompts. All participants also receive a one-hour individual coaching session after the series ends.
Session 1 / Wednesday 2.16 - Tarot for Your Novel’s CHARACTERS
Novels are driven first and foremost by the characters — their pasts, their desires, their motivations, and their own self-sabotage. Using my favorite character-focused Tarot spread, you'll better understand your main character — so much so that key plot elements will become more clear.
Session 2 / Wednesday 2.23 - Tarot for Your Novel’s WORLD
What kind of pressures, possibilities, wonders, and marvels dwell in the world of your novel? How does the world of your story interact with your characters? We'll use Tarot to explore the world of your story through your characters' eyes and craft a setting your readers can imagine, inhabit, and carry with them long after the story has ended.
Session 3 / Wednesday 3.2 - Tarot for Your Novel’s THEMES
What big questions is your novel exploring? How does your own lived experience inform the themes you're writing about? What outcomes, conflicts, and resolutions make sense given the big questions you're asking and the experience you want to give your readers?
Session 4: / Tuesday 3.8 - NOW WHAT?
This entire session is devoted to processing the insights from our first three sessions. You'll receive support around the questions you're still holding, and you'll develop a plan to carry you through the next phase of your writing process.
