A Brief History of Tarot w/ Christopher Marmolejo
A Brief History of Tarot w/ Christopher Marmolejo
Step into Tarot’s ancient archives with one of the most masterful Tarot teachers of our time, Christopher Marmolejo, who I’ve had the pleasure of studying and learning with over the past two years.
Christopher is the author of Red Tarot: A Decolonial Guide to Divinatory Literacy, which looks at each Tarot archetype through the lens of a range of decolonial perspectives alongside Tarot’s fluid traditions and modern pop culture.
In this workshop, Christopher will take us back in time to review of Tarot’s history, from its origins as a fanciful playing card game to today’s mainstream of use of Tarot among modern and everyday mystics. Christopher will share images of certain cards from different eras, along with stories from their visits to Tarot archives and museums.
Christopher has a way of opening portals within the cards, and within their teaching spaces. This workshop — even over Zoom — will feel as though you’ve crossed the threshold into another time, into a sacred temple where Tarot is the goddess and the oracle.
THIS WORKSHOP IS INTENDED FOR folks at any level of Tarot practice. If you’re just curious or a beginner, this workshop will offer a beautiful orientation to Tarot’s roots and evolution. For experienced practitioners, you’ll discover new layers to the cards and feel a stronger connection to Tarot’s history and lineage.
BRING: you journal, Tarot deck, something to write with, and any questions about the history of our favorite divinatory practice.
WHAT TO EXPECT: a lecture and presentation with images of Tarot cards throughout history, along with information about how myth and cultural priorities influenced the names and meanings of some cards over time; stories from Christopher’s visits to Tarot archives and museums; time for Q&A. We obviously can not cover anywhere near the full history of the Tarot, which, in its entirety, still remains somewhat of a mystery. But you’ll get a beautiful introduction to this rich legacy, with an unrivaled guide.
CHRISTOPHER MARMOLEJO is a Brown, Queer and Trans writer, diviner, and educator. They use divination to promote a literacy of liberation. Their first book, Red Tarot: A Decolonial Guide to Divinatory Literacy, was published in 2024 by North Atlantic Books. With 9-plus years of experience as a trained educator focused on cultivating classrooms of emancipatory possibility, Christopher works with students around the world to plant and nurture the seed of a divinatory practice, finely weaving Tarot, astrology, and curanderismo with decolonial, queer epistemologies and critical, feminist pedagogies. Christopher offers ongoing courses in the Tarot as well as readings. Check out their website, Substack newsletter, and Instagram.
